Areas: where to base yourself
- Old town: best for evenings out and walking.
- Near the railway or ring roads: business hotels with parking, convenient for drivers.
Food and drink
Look for lucanica sausage, strascinati pasta, lamb and mushrooms from the hills, and cheeses such as caciocavallo. Aglianico del Vulture is the red wine to try.
Money-saving tips
- Potenza hotels are often cheaper than Matera’s, so it can be a good-value base.
- Weekend rates in business hotels can be low.
Practicalities
At this altitude, winters are cold and snow is possible, so check the forecast before driving. Many shops close in the early afternoon. Sunday public transport is limited.
