The Sasso Barisano in Matera

Where to stay in Basilicata

How to choose your bases, what to budget, and real hotels in each destination, with live rates on Booking.com.

Most visitors spend two nights in Matera and then move on by car. Choose bases by what you want from your days: a cave city, mountain villages, a beach or the wild interior.

Price bands (approximate)

Prices vary with the season. As a rough guide for a double room per night: budget B&Bs and guesthouses from around €50–90; mid-range hotels around €90–180; upscale cave suites and sea-view hotels from around €180, and much more at the top addresses in high season.

When to book

For Matera at Easter, in summer, at weekends and at Christmas, and for Maratea in August, book two to three months ahead. Small villages have few rooms, so book ahead in summer there too. Outside those times you can often book a few days before.
