In the heart of Basilicata, the Dolomiti Lucane rise in a row of jagged sandstone spires, nothing to do with the Alps but named for their resemblance. Tucked into the rock on either side are Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, both members of the association of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
The villages are famous for the Volo dell’Angelo, the Flight of the Angel: a steel cable strung high across the valley, on which you fly, lying face down in a harness, from one village to the other. On foot, the Path of the Seven Stones links them through woods and legend. The area is part of the Gallipoli Cognato–Piccole Dolomiti Lucane regional park.
Highlights
- Volo dell’Angelo: the cable flight between the villages.
- Castelmezzano: houses stacked below the rock, and the steps of the old castle.
- Pietrapertosa: one of the highest villages in the region, with a castle cut into the rock.
- Path of the Seven Stones: a story trail between the two villages.
- Via ferrata and bridge: protected climbing routes and a suspension bridge.
- Gallipoli Cognato forest: woods, wildlife and quiet trails.
