Basilicata itineraries

Four routes through Lucania, from a long weekend to a grand tour.

Basilicata is best explored by car. Roads are often winding, so distances take longer than the map suggests. These routes allow for that; change them to suit you and keep some slack for the views.

Itinerary questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough for Basilicata?

Yes, for Matera, the Dolomiti Lucane, Craco and one coast at a comfortable pace.

Can I do these routes without a car?

Only partly. Matera, Potenza, Maratea and Metaponto have trains, but the villages and parks need a car or tours.

Can I combine Basilicata with Puglia or the Amalfi Coast?

Yes. Matera is about an hour from Bari and Alberobello, and Maratea is a few hours south of Salerno.

How long are the drives?

Allow about 1.5 hours from Matera to the Dolomiti Lucane and about 3 hours from Matera to Maratea.
